Overview

Cenovus Energy is one of Canada's largest oil and gas companies, operating major oil sands projects in northern Alberta. Across their construction and capital projects portfolio, contracts management was a critical — and critically inefficient — function.

Cost Engineers were spending 40–50 hours per week manually extracting data from legacy Microsoft Access and Excel systems, then reconciling it against Maximo for monthly reporting. The Supply Chain Management Transformation (SCMT) program was the initiative to replace this entirely with Oracle Contract Management and an 8-feed Maximo integration.

⚠ Challenge

Weeks of manual reconciliation monthly

Cost Engineers spending 40–50 hours per week on manual data extraction from Access and Excel. Monthly Maximo reconciliation taking several weeks, with frequent discrepancies and high risk of reporting errors on a multi-billion dollar oil sands portfolio.

✦ Solution

Oracle CM + 8-feed Maximo integration

Oracle Contract Management implemented across all oil sands projects with an 8-feed bidirectional Maximo integration mapping hundreds of fields — monthly reconciliation reduced from weeks to 2–3 hours, 40–50 hrs/week of manual extraction eliminated.

Weeks→2h

Monthly contract reconciliation automated

The 8-feed Maximo integration automated a process that previously consumed most of Finance's monthly cycle — replacing weeks of manual reconciliation with a 2–3 hour automated run that executes reliably every month.

Solution Delivery

Requirements Discovery & Lifecycle Mapping

Detailed analysis with Cost Engineers, Finance, and Supply Chain to map the complete contract lifecycle — every data point needed between Oracle CM and Maximo across AFEs, contracts, POs, vouchers, receipts, and invoices.

2

Oracle Contract Management Implementation

Designed and implemented Oracle CM across all Cenovus oil sands projects — replacing manual Access/Excel extraction with system-driven, always-current contract cost visibility.

3

8-Feed Maximo Integration Architecture

Architected and built the 8-feed bidirectional Maximo ↔ Oracle integration — mapping hundreds of fields across both systems covering AFEs, Contracts, POs, Vouchers, Receipts, Invoices, Cost Actuals, and Commitments.

4

Oracle BI Reporting & Publisher

Designed Oracle BI reports and Publisher templates consolidating all six contract document types into a unified reporting system — complete cost visibility without any manual aggregation.
